Five reasons for a college to have employment assessment programs
Employment assessment programs at colleges are an effort at helping students attain their goals at the completion of a program. It helps students select courses that suit their needs and enables them to secure official qualifications.
A candidate’s success is assessed not from the percentiles and grade points in the mark sheet, but from their practical knowledge and technical skills. This is what justifies the significant role played by employment assessment programs at various institutions.
According to Palomba & Banta in their book ‘Assessment Essentials: Planning, Implementation & Improving Assessment in Higher Education’, programmatic assessment “helps determine if students can integrate what they learn in individual courses into a coherent whole”. It is interested in the cumulative effects of the educational process, program-level assessment may focus on the extent to which each student in a program acquires the knowledge, skills, beliefs and feelings specified as program outcomes.
A standardized test such as an employability assessment exhibits the strengths and weaknesses of the students. A response like this helps the student understand where he or she is lacking and how they can improve and where his or her strengths lie.
It also helps students streamline their options. Once a student understands where their strengths lie, they are able to make an informed decisions regarding their future and do not fumble around looking for options.
It helps establishing the name of the college. A Tier II or Tier III college which may not have a popular brand image can still establish itself by producing employable students who know their strengths and weaknesses
One common strategy in tight labor markets is to shift focus from hiring for a specific set of skills, abilities, knowledge, etc., needed to do a specific job towards hiring for potential. In such cases, a few key abilities or characteristics are identified and applicants are evaluated based on their ability to bring this valued “raw material” to the table. This need for a candidate is being successfully fulfilled by such assessment programs.
Expectations are vague on having strong results through the use of assessments without a clear understanding of what needs to be assessed, and why. Usually, this involves spending some time to take a look at both personal and organizational factors that must be addressed using assessment. More sophisticated implementations allow the organization to define the key elements required for success across all jobs as well as for each specific job.
Thus, it is mandatory to have employability assessment program for a college to make the best educational center for students and get the maximum benefit from it.
